On the 29th of August, Hog Roast Portsmouth had the honour of catering a very special Families Day onboard HMS Trent at HMNB Portsmouth. With 150 guests gathered to celebrate together, the atmosphere was lively, warm, and filled with excitement as families enjoyed a day packed with activities, laughter, and of course, plenty of delicious food.
Catering Manager Jack and his team arrived early to set up and prepare a feast fit for such an occasion. The star of the menu was a whole roasted pig, carved and served with golden crackling, freshly made apple sauce, and sage and onion stuffing. The aroma of the hog roast wafted across the dockside, instantly drawing attention and whetting everyone’s appetite.
To balance out the hearty main, guests were treated to a refreshing selection of sides. Tomato and mozzarella salad, a crisp mixed salad, and creamy coleslaw brought vibrant colour and freshness to the plates. Herb-dressed roasted new potatoes added a comforting touch, completing the feast.
One of the highlights of the day was how inclusive the menu felt. Alongside the classic hog roast, Hog Roast Portsmouth also prepared a fantastic vegan option. Our BBQ pulled jackfruit buns, steeped in smoky hickory sauce and paired with crunchy slaw, were a huge success and ensured every guest, regardless of dietary needs, had something flavoursome to enjoy.
The food was served buffet-style onto rustic wooden crockery with eco-friendly cutlery, keeping the setup practical yet stylish for an outdoor event of this scale. Families could relax and tuck in without fuss, and many were delighted with the generous portions.
As the day unfolded, HMS Trent buzzed with energy. Children played, families shared laughter, and there was a real sense of pride in being able to come together. For Jack and his team, it was a privilege to provide the food for such a meaningful day, and to hear so many happy comments about the hog roast and jackfruit buns was the icing on the cake.
